Dear visitors and supporters of NATO Days in Ostrava and Czech Air Force Days,

This year we will remind the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain – one of the battles that changed the course of the Second World War and directed the Allied forces to the victory over Nazi Germany. By celebrating this event we want to hail everyone, whom we are grateful for our hardly earned freedom. We cannot forget that there were also Czechoslovak soldiers fighting alongside other nations within the Royal Air Force, soldiers who had to flee their country to fight for it.

There are just few heroes, who have personally tasted dog fights of the Second World War. And there are even less aircrafts that witnessed these dramas.

So we have decided to prepare something really special, to invite:

Hawker Hurricane Mk.I R4118,

a direct participant of the Battle of Britain and the last flying Hurricane that witnessed the battle.

It was these aircraft which took the greatest burden of fighting the Battle of Britain – it is said that Hurricanes account for up to 80% shoot-downs of enemy planes. R4118 is therefore a real legend, which is going to take part in NATO Days in Ostrava and Czech Air Force Days.

There are ten Hurricanes of different versions flying in Europe, but only this one directly participated in the fighting 70 years earlier. It is thus unique in the whole world and its historical premiere in Czech skies will be at NATO Days in Ostrava and Czech Air Force Days. After a difficult history R4118 went through, it was completely reconstructed by a private corporation, to which we have to pay necessary expenses connected with the participation in amount of £15,000.

NATO Days in Ostrava and Czech Air Force Days are and will be a show open for everyone, a show without any admission charge. Because otherwise we would be just hardly looking for sources to cover the expenses for the Hurricane participation, we have decided to raise a public gathering. Those of you who decide to donate will in reward receive a unique collector’s print and other privileges during the show.

It is for the first time we have decided for such a step, not just in context of remembering the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, but mostly because of the possibility to hail surviving heroes of the war.

We believe that with your help we will be able to welcome Hawker Hurricane Mk I R4118 at Leoš Janáček Ostrava Airport this September.
